MILLBURN'S
LOCAL ROOFING
CONTRACTOR.

Millburn — including the Short Hills section — is one of the most distinctive residential markets in Essex County. Pre-war center-hall colonials and Tudor-revival homes dominate the older streets, with early-1950s custom infill across the Short Hills neighborhoods. Slate restoration, copper detailing, and designer architectural shingles are the table stakes.

WHY MILLBURN IS DIFFERENT

PRE-WAR ESTATES, TUDOR REVIVALS, AND SHORT HILLS CUSTOM HOMES.

Millburn's housing stock is anchored by pre-war center-hall colonials and Tudor-revival homes — many built between the 1910s and the 1930s. The Short Hills section adds early-1950s custom infill, often on larger lots with steeper pitches and more elaborate roof geometry. This is not a builder-grade replacement market.

Working on a Millburn or Short Hills roof means slate, cedar, and copper come up in almost every estimate. Designer architectural shingles like CertainTeed Landmark Pro are our default when slate restoration isn't the right move. Copper step and counter flashing match the existing detailing on Tudor and Colonial Revival houses where aluminum would look wrong.

FAQ · Millburn

MILLBURN-SPECIFIC
QUESTIONS.

For pricing, materials, and timing questions, see Services.

I have an original slate roof. Restore or replace?
It depends on what we see when we walk it. If 75% or more of the slate is sound, restoration is usually the smart long-term move — slate fields last a century if maintained. If the deck or the fastening is failing across multiple zones, a slate-look architectural shingle or full slate replacement is the honest path. We walk every roof before quoting and bring photos.
Do you do copper flashing on Short Hills custom homes?
Yes. Copper step flashing, copper counter-flashing on chimneys, and copper valley work are standard scope on pre-war estates and high-end Short Hills builds. The cost-of-ownership math favors copper on roofs that are going to be there for fifty years.
What's the best architectural shingle for a 1920s colonial?
Default is CertainTeed Landmark Pro — heavier weight, 50-year warranty, and a color palette that complements pre-war architecture. For homes where the original was slate or cedar shake, we'll spec a designer architectural with a more textured profile.
How long does a written quote stay valid?
15 days. We don't run expiration-pressure tactics. If you need more time, just call. The price stands.
